What is Calibration
Calibration is the process of comparing a measuring instrument with a measurement standard to establish the relationship between the values indicated by the instrument and those of the standard. This can be taken further to include adjustment of the instrument to ensure it performs within known limits.
Why Calibrate
In power generation for example, being able to make accurate measurements can save energy. Even a small improvement such as 0.5 Deg C better accuracy could save hundreds of thousands of pounds each year. As any process or monitoring system is only as good as the control values it uses, reliable data is essential for reliable performance. To this end periodic checks or calibration is performed on measuring instrumentation to ensure they are operating within specification.
How frequently should an instrument be calibrated?
The frequency with which instrument calibration should be carried out will vary depending on the application and the safety/commercial importance of the parameter being measured.
All measuring devices will change characteristics with time; the issue is how much do they change? To establish this, a new device should be calibrated more frequently to record its repeatability. Then, as calibration history is built up, you can see any change in errors between each calibration. If the change is very small and re-producible then the calibration interval can be increased. Equally, it can work the other way too, where calibration could be monthly or even more frequent than that.
Initially we recommend instrument calibration every 12 months. All the equipment we use to calibrate our products are traceable to standards held at a national measurement institute. While our products can be re-configured by the user, this is not re-calibration. The original calibration data was entered into the product during manufacture and therefore Status Instruments is ideally suited to re-calibrate our products!
