BothSEM1720: Dual Channel Temperature Signal Conditioner with Maths Functions
Two sensors, one DIN rail unit. You also have the flexibility to decide how their signals are combined.
Process plants often need more than a straight sensor-to-signal conversion. You might want a backup sensor to take over when the primary fails, or the difference between two temperatures sent to the control system as a single signal. The Status Instruments SEM1720 handles both without extra hardware.
What is the SEM1720?
The SEM1720 is a dual channel signal conditioner for temperature sensors, with maths functions. It accepts RTD, thermocouple or potentiometer sensors and provides isolated industrial process output signals in mA or volts.
Key features
• Dual channel with 5-port isolation (3.75 kV), so the inputs, outputs and power supply are electrically separated from one another.
• Flexible inputs. Both channels take RTD, thermocouple or potentiometer sensors.
• Universal outputs. Outputs can be set to current or voltage.
• Maths functions between channels. Output signals can follow either input sensor, or a maths function of both sensor signals.
• Sensor redundancy switching for applications where a failed sensor must not interrupt the measurement.
• Eight user-configured presets, so common setups can be stored and recalled.
Output Options
Outputs can be adjusted over the full 0 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V range. Therefore, you can produce standard process signals such as 4 to 20 mA or 1 to 5 V. The same adjustability covers custom scalings like 0 to 1 mA.
Where it fits
Because the two channels can be linked in different ways, one SEM1720 can replace several single-channel conditioners:
• Differential temperature. Measure the difference across a heat exchanger, or between flow and return lines, and send it as one signal.
• Averaging. Combine two sensors in a vessel or duct to get a more representative reading.
• Redundant measurement. Switch automatically to a second sensor if the first fails, which suits critical processes.
• Two independent channels. Use it as a compact dual conditioner where panel space is tight.
Typical sectors are automation and process control. The unit is DIN rail mounted, made in Great Britain and listed as RoHS compliant.
